Inclusive Development Fundamental Skills: Applying Testing Tools
Issued by
AFB Talent Lab
By earning this badge, the AFB Talent Lab intern or apprentice has demonstrated a functional understanding of automated testing tools, including when such tools are best applied during the product lifecycle, how to conduct automated tests on an interface, report the results, and interpret remediation recommendations based on the appropriate audience. Earners have also explored the differences between automated testing tools and automated fixes like accessibility overlays.

Skills
Earning Criteria
-
Complete coursework on the application of automated accessibility testing tools including how and when to use them, what types of issues they are suited at finding, and where they can be applied in the software development lifecycle.
-
Research lightweight/manually-augmented tools (e.g. browser extensions) and full-suite automated tools, practice using these tools on familiar websites, and reflect on the issues identified and how these results compare with the claims made by the testing product’s marketing.
-
Perform both manual and automated testing with a pair testing partner on a set of webpages, reporting the results of each test; then complete a written reflection on the experience of using the automated tools.
-
Using the results of prior automated and manual testing, develop a report for a lead web developer who has little experience with accessibility, contextualizing the results within the types of testing performance and making a case for integrating manual and automated accessibility testing into future development cycles.
Standards
AFB Talent Lab’s Accessibility & Usability Standards focus on competency in five key areas, including Industry Regulations & Guidelines, Assistive Technology, Inclusive Design, Inclusive Development, and Process Management. Please visit the AFB Talent Lab website for more details on our program standards and learning targets.
