Earning Criteria

Mentors build a learning community with other undergraduate research mentors, acquire knowledge and skills to align mentor and mentee expectations on projects, and clearly communicate expectations for the mentoring relationship through production of a written mentor-mentee compact.

Mentors practice techniques for maintaining effective communication, including active listening and communicating across diverse dimensions. Mentors learn about and reflect upon mentoring students in a culturally responsive manner, and articulate their personal mentoring philosophy and plan, including producing a written mentoring philosophy document.

• Active participation in synchronous online trainings. (6 hours) • Thematic activities during each training (conversations, self-reflection, brainstorming, small-group activities). (Four-1.5-hour sessions) • Two documents for review by leaders of the online training sessions: A Mentor-Mentee compact and a Mentoring Philosophy document. (approximately 4-hours)
