Evolving Family Dynamics and Structure
Earners will have developed basic and intermediate skills in Family Science pertaining to cultural diversity in family structure, dynamics, research, and service delivery. Students who earn this micro-credential will be competent in: describing family dynamics, strengths, and weaknesses; analyzing information on children and families in diverse cultural and family structural settings; and applying knowledge of how children and and their families interact with social institutions.

Complete FAMS 1123 Family Relations with a grade of "C" or higher.

Complete FAMS 4333 Current Issues in Family Diversity with a grade of "C" or higher.

Earners will recall and explain the concept of "family" and its various definitions across cultures and contexts.

Earners will analyze and compare the implications of different definitions of "family" on social policies and societal interactions with families.

Earners will describe and differentiate key concepts from at least three major theories of family life (e.g., family systems theory, conflict theory, and structural-functional theory).

Earners will identify and evaluate personal and societal biases that influence judgments of family structure and functioning and suggest strategies to mitigate these biases.

Earners will identify and categorize behaviors and patterns that demonstrate healthy or unhealthy relationship dynamics in couples and families.

Earners will analyze the impact of researcher bias on studies of family structure, ethnicity, and sexual diversity; apply family and human development theories (e.g., family systems theory, ecological theory) to case studies of family diversity.
