Advisor Academy (YCA-AA), is an optional training program for the research advisors or mentors of biomedical and health sciences PhD students participating in the Yale Ciencia Academy (YCA). The YCA-AA has been designed to help advisors and mentors better support and mentor YCA fellows (and other students from minoritized backgrounds) through their PhD completion and professional development and to become advocates for inclusion in their departments.

Orientation Session | Advisors came together to meet their colleagues, discuss learning objectives, and set intentional goals.

“Planning and Advising for Productivity” | Advisors received practical strategies for how to leverage the Individual Development Plan (IDP) to help their YCA Fellow reach career or research milestones and how to improve the productivity of their labs. Advisors learned about the underlying factors that disproportionately affect students from underrepresented groups and how they can provide meaningful support.

“Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Immersive” | Advisors participated in an engaging immersive experience featuring the testimonies of minoritized trainees. Through their stories, they explore the challenges many underrepresented students face in their training environments (e.g., isolation, imposter syndrome, the “minority tax,” etc.) and how they can promote cultural sensitivity and inclusion by leveraging their spheres of influence and the power of leading through empathy.
