Play Therapy: Healing Trauma and Loss

Earners of this designation have the demonstrated skills to discuss traumatic and grief reactions in children and ways to support caregivers during treatment. They can articulate how trauma impacts children and how play therapy allows children to use the language of play to resolve these issues and return to tasks needed for healthy development. Earners can discuss and apply major protocols and phases of treatment and implement interventions for different age groups and developmental levels.

Earning Criteria

Possess an active, unconditional state mental health license or currently employed (and/or pursuing education) in a behavioral health or school counseling field.
Complete the 16 contact hour workshop of play therapy training through VCU Continuing and Professional Education (APT Approved Provider 15-397).
Pass a two-part assessment including a multiple-choice test and scored rubric demonstrating mastery of workshop objectives via small and large group activities and discussion.
