Reimagining Opportunities to Advance Reasoning (R.O.A.R) in Mathematics
This Center for PAInT workshop, in collaboration with the Coalition of Science Literacy and the Secondary Mathematics Education Program, described strategies that can enhance students reasoning skills and support the Florida B.E.S.T. Mathematics Thinking and Reasoning Standards and the National Arts Standards.
Skills
- Design mathematical tasks that embed a variety of rich opportunities for reasoning and proving
- Identify four types of opportunities for reasoning and proving in mathematical tasks
- Identify instructional moves that inhibit, sustain or advance productive mathematical discourse
- Illustrate how visualization of images and figures can contribute to students developing reasoning skills
- Incorporate arts integration with mathematics.
- Modify mathematical tasks to increase the opportunities for reasoning and proving embedded in them
- Use the FullProof digital tool to write proofs in Euclidean geometry
- Utilize FullProof platform as a pedagogical tool to support geometry students proof writing
- Utilize instructional moves that sustain and advance mathematical discourse that reflects cognitive rigor in classrooms
Earning Criteria
