Selecting Strategies for Whole Class Discussions

Students gain appreciation for the importance of mathematics discussions and learn Five Practices for Orchestrating Productive Whole-Class Discussions. Workshop focuses on the critical, but sometimes overlooked, practice of selecting strategies for discussions. Using student work, participants will explore these practices with elementary fraction content. Participants will receive knowledge of importance of being purposeful when selecting strategies to promote productive whole class discussions.

Participants learn about the importance of being purposeful when selecting strategies to promote productive whole-class discussions. A framework will be presented for participants to learn broad categories of considerations for selecting strategies in-the-moment and detailed sub-categories for further refinement when selecting strategies to move toward a mathematical goal. Participants demonstrate practices of selecting appropriate student work according to framework for class discussions.
