Introduction to GC/MS

Students steam distilled a variety of spices, and then utilized solvent extraction to obtain the essential oil of their selected spice. The badge earner can prepare and run samples for Gas Chromatography/ Mass Spectrometers with light supervision. Students have an introductory understanding and ability to analyze results from a mass spectrometer.

Badge holders have demonstrated introductory expertise in extracting essential oils from spice samples using steam distillation, analyzing essential oils using Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry (GC/MS) techniques, preparing samples for analysis, conducting Mass Spectral Library searches, and interpreting analysis results.
