Introduction to Weather Interpretation

Learn the basics how to find and interpret weather data for general emergency management purposes. A frequent requirement of these emergency management-themed positions is the ability to quickly gather weather data for reporting and/or creating action plans. This requires knowledge of a complex and often loosely connected series of websites and web tools spanning National Weather Service, NYS Mesonet, and various other sites and tools produced by private sector sources.

Earning Criteria

The final forecast discussion for each participant will be a source of evidence of learning. The culminating project to build upon the information learned in the three preceding lessons in the series. Students will apply their new knowledge of the National Weather Service data, NOAA Outlooks and differing weather models to communicate a real-time forecast. Participants will be graded on their ability to use weather resources to create forecasts and interpret weather data.
