Badge earners will explore ethics related to research with animals, human subjects, and non-human subject research. They will learn the historical context of research ethics, practice applying ethical models to research case studies, design responsible and ethical research projects, develop knowledge on the regulatory ethics committees (i.e., IRB, IACUC, and IBC), and gain practical experience submitting research proposals.

Learners will understand Historical Context and Foundational Principles of Research Ethics: Learners will demonstrate knowledge of the historical development of research ethics, including key events and documents (e.g., Nuremberg Code, Belmont Report) and their impact on current ethical guidelines

Apply Ethical Models to Research Projects and Analyze, Conduct, and Present a Research Ethics Case Study/Contemporary Issue. Learneres will be able to analyze research scenarios using established ethical frameworks and models. Students will demonstrate the ability to research, critically analyze, and present on a complex ethical dilemma or contemporary issue in research as a cumulative final project.

Design Responsible and Ethical Research Projects: Students will demonstrate the ability to design research projects that integrate ethical considerations for human subjects, animal subjects, and non-human subject research (e.g., archival research).

Practice Research Proposal Submission to Ethics Committees: Students will gain practical experience in preparing and submitting research proposals to the relevant ethics committees. Through this experience, students with develop knowledge of the roles, responsibilities, and submission process for relevant ethics boards/committees.
