Phlebotomy
It is necessary for students at Jackson Free Clinic to draw blood. JFC is staffed by volunteer students who provide medical services under supervision. Volunteer students receive initial phlebotomy training at M1 Orientation, but most students have little ability & confidence to perform the procedure well. The goals of this course are: 1) improve the students' procedural skills; 2) increase the student's confidence in phlebotomy to improve patient safety and satisfaction at JFC.

Earning Criteria
-
The "flipped classroom model" is used to deploy didactic information. A slide show is used that includes background information, preparation, steps of phlebotomy, documentation, safety, and troubleshooting. The students receive access to the slide show when they sign up for the hands-on session and are instructed to review the information.
-
Hands-on sessions are scheduled online, on a voluntary basis. A group of students will participate in a 30-min session and they are instructed by one or two instructors.
-
Each student is required to perform a successful phlebotomy on 2 different skin color arms, under the instructor's supervision. They are provided with sterile supplies to practice in pairs including tourniquet placement and therapeutic talk.
