OMT for Sleep

This non-credit co-curricular micro-credential allows students to recognize risk factors for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) utilizing orofacial myofunctional therapy (OMT) assessment methods. Obtaining this badge equips dental hygienists to assess, educate, and refer patients for further testing and provides a competitive advantage in employment opportunities. It is $100 and open to undergraduate and graduate students in select dental hygiene programs.

This micro-credential is projected to start in Fall 2025. For more information, please contact Terri Patrick at tpatrick@twu.edu or Charlene Dickinson at cdickinson@twu.edu . This micro-credential costs $100 for the earner and is only open to students in the BSDH Professional Entry-Level, RDH-to-BSDH, Dual-Enrollment Dental Hygiene, or Master of Science in Health Studies with Dental Hygiene Focus programs.

Earners will take pre- and post-tests at the start and end of the micro-credential to assess changes in knowledge, skills, and attitudes regarding OSA.

Earners will be required to read relevant literature on OSA, view assigned webinars, and compare validated assessment instruments for assessing sleep quality.

Earners will discuss cases and considerations with other earners and the facilitator and compare validated assessment instruments for assessing sleep quality.

Students who earn this badge will integrate assessments, screenings, and referrals into the dental hygiene process of care by identifying developmental and functional orofacial signs and symptoms of obstructive sleep apnea across different age groups.
