In this level you'll learn the creative use of light for storytelling, along with professional lighting equipment and job roles. Experience how color, brightness, and texture are used in lighting design to create moods and atmospheric effects. You’ll also dig into technical systems with lighting fixture types, lighting angles, DMX control, moving-head fixtures. By the end you will be able to operate a small lighting console to control the mood and feel of a space.

Earning Criteria

Understand technical terms to describe color, brightness, and texture. Pass a writtten test.

Differentiate between lighting fixture types: strip lights/battens, movers, wash lights, spots, and effect lights.

DMX: Understand the function and setup of DMX systems including addressing fixtures. Operate a basic DMX console to program scenes, cues, and looks.

Identify and operate moving-head fixtures. Understand functions and limitations. Be able to describe to a client what is possible and not possible with such fixtures when designing a show.

Understand and apply atmospheric effects: hazers, foggers, geysers. Know how to safely operate them and what their limitations are.

Understand the creative use of light for storytelling, visibility, and mood across live events, broadcast, theater, and architecture. Demonstrate the ability to design and execute multiple looks using a console and multiple fixtures at a small show.

Understand what lasers are and how they are used in Lighting Design. Know how to identify lighting fixtures that use lasers. Be able to verbally describe safe usage and UNSAFE usage of laser fixtures including FAA compliance. This means you know how to say NO to a dangerous situation involving amateur laser usage.
