Writing Professional Emails: Understanding Expectations

Although many emails in the workplace come across as informal communications, many others stand as professional documents that are not only formal but archived. Drawing from a host of one-on-one interviews of professional engineers, faculty, and students, this badge aims to help young engineers and scientists understand the expectations placed on these more formal emails. This badge was created by Professor Michael Alley, who is the author of The Craft of Scientific Writing (Springer 2018).

Earning Criteria

Take the online diagnostic for understanding the expectations on professional emails. This diagnostic quiz contains at least 10 questions.

View the 40-minutes of film that address understanding the expectations for audience analysis, organization, and language and illustration of reports in engineering and science.

Show mastery of the material by scoring at least 90 percent on a final comprehensive quiz that contains at least 20 questions. If necessary, retake quiz to score a 90 percent grade.
