Earners of this badge understand the basic principles behind battery operation. They know various existing mathematical models that capture battery dynamics. They know the concepts behind estimation algorithms to estimate typically unmeasured battery states. They have the understanding of common battery faults and some algorithms that can detect these faults. They also have the knowledge of battery control algorithms to achieve certain performance and safety criteria.

Earning Criteria
-
Complete a 15-hour online course, consisting of video lectures, readings, knowledge check activities, and homework assignments.
-
A written assignment asked students to describe the nature of the battery models. They explained which physical laws or phenomenological principles governed these models, what each term in the models indicated, and the underlying modeling assumptions.
-
Software demonstrations were conducted as a homework assignment using MATLAB code, in which students implemented estimation algorithms for battery state-of-charge estimation, detection algorithms for battery internal short circuit faults, and control algorithms for battery temperature control.
