Introduction to Criminal Justice (CJS 101)

The course objective is to examine the purpose and functions of the criminal justice system with attention paid to the police, courts, and corrections on the local, state, and federal levels. It explains the limitations of a system initially designed to respond to the needs of Colonial America. The course also focuses on individuals' involvement in the criminal justice system, as citizens and as actors, and how that involvement affects the system.

The methods of assessment include quizzes, examinations and a comprehensive final exam with a minimum passing score of 70 percent.

The methods of instruction include discussion, textbook, digital study guide, and webinars. The general course topics include the foundations of criminal justice; law enforcement; the courts; corrections; and additional issues in criminal justice.
