Language and Literacy Development in Young Children (ECE 216) (v4)

This course is designed to provide early childhood education professionals with a new approach to teaching early literacy skills with a multicultural perspective. The multicultural approach to literacy presented in this course provides an understanding of how children develop literacy skills and cultural awareness. The four major components of communication— speaking, listening, writing, and reading—are fully explored with each age group.

Earning Criteria

The methods of assessment include quizzes, examinations, and written papers with a minimum passing score of 70 percent.

The methods of instruction include practical exercises, discussion, study guide and textbook, and an optional webinar. The general course topics include Early Literacy: A Multicultural Approach; Emergent Literacy and Music as Natural Language; Speaking, Listening, and the Art as Natural Language; Becoming a Writer and the Emergence of Reading; and Literacy in School and at Home.
