Science of Reading
This badge recognizes proficiency in foundational literacy skills aligned with the Science of Reading (SoR), required for all Oklahoma teacher candidates (SB 362; Strong Readers Act). Completers gain hands-on experience in phonemic awareness, decoding, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. They use data to guide instruction and support students with reading challenges, including dyslexia, using evidence-based strategies and research-backed literacy practices.

Earning Criteria

Achieve a grade of C or higher in EDLT 4123 Language and Literacy Development Kindergarten through Third Grade.

Know and be able to apply instructional strategies for explicit instruction and development of young children’s oral language ability, including the development of vocabulary, speaking, and listening skills.

Understand the relationships between various factors of literacy development, including phonemic awareness, word recognition (including phonics, structural analysis, high frequency words), fluency, comprehension, writing (spelling, writing process, mechanics and grammar, handwriting), and affect/motivation.

Know and be able to apply multiple methods, both explicit and implicit, for the systematic development of all levels of phonemic awareness, word recognition (including phonics, structural analysis, high frequency words), fluency, comprehension (including comprehension strategies, response to reading, text structure), and writing (spelling, recursive writing process, mechanics and grammar, handwriting).
