Microbiology Aseptic Technique and Plating Procedures
Students will gain useful skills such as learning proper aseptic technique, proper culturing and aseptic transfer methods, and proper plating techniques such as spread, continuous, and quadrant plating techniques. Several hands-on sessions throughout the semester will give students adequate practice in carrying out these procedures.

Earning Criteria
-
Students are required to be enrolled in Microbiology (BIOL 2155).
-
Towards the end of the semester, students will be given an assessment that will test their proficiency in these skills. To earn the Microbiology Aseptic Technique and Plating Procedures credential, students must complete the assessment with an 80% or higher.
-
The credential aligns with the widely accepted, nationally used protocols and teaching guidelines published by the American Society for Microbiology (ASM) for the core laboratory skill of aseptic technique as well as core microbiological plating techniques, which include: - Spread plating - Continuous streak plating - Quadrant streak plating. These are considered best practice standards across U.S. microbiology clinical and educational laboratories and appear in all microbiology lab manuals.
