Earners of this micro-credential have demonstrated proficiency in preparation in the Science of Reading (SoR) concepts and practices including providing explicit and systematic instruction in phonological awareness, decoding, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension and implementing reading strategies that research has shown to be successful.

Complete EDUC 2323 Foundations of Literacy with a grade of “C” or better. This course explores methods and materials for teaching reading, with focus on emergent to conventional readers. Covers Science of Reading concepts, including the five elements (phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, comprehension), the Simple View of Reading, Scarborough’s Reading Rope, and evidence-based practices.

Complete EDUC 3222 Strategies and Materials for Literacy Instruction with a grade of “C” or better. This course builds on EDUC 2323 with strategies for teaching literacy to beginning through upper-grade readers. Emphasizes evaluation of texts, Science of Reading concepts, and research-based practices. Includes the Active View of Reading (Duke & Cartwright), Writing Rope, MTSS for dyslexia, differentiation, and ILA standards and position statements.

Complete one following courses with a grade of “C” or better: EDUC 4323 Assessment and Instruction of Literacy OR DFED 3123 Literacy Applications for ASL/English Bilingual Education.
