The From the Start Reading Project includes nine dynamic learning modules focused on evidence-based practices that support tier 1 literacy instruction. Participants who successfully complete the course will develop an understanding of and acquire basic application skills in the following areas of literacy: oral language, phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, foundational writing, vocabulary, comprehension, writing processes.

Skills
- Awareness of the components of early literacy and how they are integrated with one another.
- Describe how the brain learns to read and the models that demonstrate that process.
- Understanding of the importance of comprehension in reading development and activities to develop comprehension skills.
- Understanding of the importance of fluency in reading development and activities to develop fluency skills.
- Understanding of the importance of foundational writing and writing processes in literacy development and activities to develop writing skills.
- Understanding of the importance of oral language in reading development and activities to develop oral language skills.
- Understanding of the importance of phonemic awareness in reading development and activities to develop phonemic awareness skills.
- Understanding of the importance of phonics in reading development and activities to develop phonics skills.
- Understanding of the importance of vocabulary in reading development and activities to develop vocabulary skills.
Earning Criteria

Successful participants will complete all online coursework (about 56 hours) and attend eight 6-hour live training sessions (48 hours). At the midway point and the end of the course, the participant will take a summative assessment in order to progress.
Standards
This course will help teachers apply best practices to better teach students the Oklahoma Academic Standards for English language arts.
