Issued by the National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification® (NCTRC®), the Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist® (CTRS) credential indicates that the CTRS has met specific educational and professional experience requirements, in addition to passing the NCTRC Certification Exam. CTRS credential will be valid for the next five-year recertification cycle subject to NCTRC Certification Standards.

Earning Criteria

Complete and receive a passing score on the NCTRC Certification Exam. *Applicants must obtain Professional Eligibility from NCTRC to register for the NCTRC Certification Exam.
Submission of all application and exam fees.
PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS: Completion of professional experience requirement: either (1) Academic Internship or (2) Paid Professional Work Experience that uses the Therapeutic Recreation process in accordance with current NCTRC Standards. Review the professional experience requirements as part of the Professional Eligibility Application process.
EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS: Coursework completion of Therapeutic Recreation content and specific Supportive Coursework in accordance with current NCTRC Standards. Completion of a baccalaureate degree or higher from an accredited college or university verified by an official transcript. Review the educational requirements as part of the Professional Eligibility Application process.

NCCA Standards for Certification Programs

The NCCA's Standards for Accreditation for Certification Programs, which were created in the mid-1970s, were the first standards developed by the credentialing industry for professional certification programs.
