Mental Health First Aid - Higher Education Certification

Merrimack College Mental Health First Aid for Higher Education teaches participants how to identify, understand and respond to signs of mental illnesses and substance use disorders. This 8-hour training — which focuses on the unique experiences and needs of college students — teaches participants techniques to reach out and provide initial support to someone who may be developing a mental health or substance use problem and help connect them to the appropriate care.

Earning Criteria

Participants learn to identify specific stress and risk factors faced by those in higher education. Practicing active listening and communications skills, participants develop action plans in a number of scenarios designed specifically for faculty, administration and students to assist in crisis response.

Participants gain an in-depth review of the mental health resources available on campus and through partnerships in the community and how to help support someone who may be developing a mental health or substance use problem connect with those resources and receive the appropriate care.
Standards
Mental Health First Aid is an international training program proven to be effective. Studies also show that the program reduces the social distance created by negative attitudes and perceptions of individuals with mental illnesses.
