IT120 Cybersecurity Principles: The course covers the major cybersecurity principles such as the CIA triangle and defense-in-depth as well as major attack vectors including malware, ransomware, insider threats, hacking, social engineering, and denial of services attacks. It includes a general discuss of security controls including firewalls, access controls and encryption. It introduces students to vulnerabilities and threats and the principles of risk management.
IT205 Digital Technologies: The course introduces students to digital technology, from large networked systems in government and industry to day-to-day devices such as laptops and smartphones. Students begin to understand the components of hardware and software, including basic programming techniques. Students install hardware and software and examine the technical support role, including ticketing and customer service. Students examine how computers work, including data encoding.
IT305 Computer Networking: The course enables students to apply networking fundamentals to the technology infrastructure. It covers the protocols behind packet switching networks, the fundamental communication technology on the Internet. It examines different media used to connect computers including fiber optics, copper cables, and wireless. It includes a discussion of cybersecurity across all types of networks, including port security and allows students to experience network tools.
IT315 Operating Systems and Virtualization: The course introduces the major functions of operating systems on a variety of devices (Windows, Unix, Android, iOS). Students install these operating systems and maintain them through automated and manual patching. The second part of the course covers virtualization and students install virtual machines on their own computers and on the cloud using tools such as VirtualBox and VMWare. Students also investigate hypervisors.
IT321 Cloud Computing: The course covers the architecture of today’s cloud providers such as AWS, Azure, Google, IBM and Oracle. It covers the fundamental cloud functions including processing, storage, networking, and emphasizes reliability, availability, and performance. It describes the type of cloud (public, private, hybrid, etc.), the types of services (IaaS, PaaS, SaaS, etc.), and the components that make cloud computing work including load balancers, auto-escalation, and security.
IT335 Corporate Cybersecurity: The course reinforces many of the cybersecurity principles previously covered on IT120, focusing on implementing high levels of security in a corporate environment. It reviews cybersecurity controls and the vulnerabilities and threats they address. Students develop incident response processes, including the collection and analysis of logs, maintaining chain of custody, and situational awareness. It examines network security devices such as firewalls and IDS/IPS.
IT351 Cloud Security and DevSecOps: The course covers the cybersecurity considerations which arise as companies move their technology assets to the cloud. Cloudjacking and other threats are discussed and techniques to minimize such adverse attacks are examined, including the access controls on data buckets. Students experiment in various cloud instances to maximize security. Problem solving and visualization of potential solutions are also covered.
IT390 Cybersecurity Attack and Defend: The course focuses on tools and techniques that can be used to attack and defend technology. Students apply a variety of open source tools, such as Kali Linux, to understand and mitigate threats. They examine cyberthreat intelligence tools, SIEM technology, and the processes carried out in a Security Operation Center (SOC). They install and configure network devices (such as switches and VPN concentrators) and network security devices.
