AL Facilitation is an ILM Recognised programme of learning, created and delivered by Action Learning Associates for those wishing to be able to facilitate their own action learning set/s. The programme aims to develop knowledge and skills through a combination of intensive group work as an action learning set and work to understand the theory behind action learning, culminating in participants having the confidence and ability to set up and facilitate their own action learning sets.

Earning Criteria

Confidence in setting up and running in-house ALS (action learning sets) : An understanding of the practicalities of setting up programmes of ALS e.g. suitable venues, ensuring accessibility etc. Appreciation of the challenges that can arise in in-house ALS e.g. conflicts between departments, need for participants to be peers, confidentiality. Ability to promote action learning internally and use language/style suitable for their context. Ability to design an appropriate recruitment process

Thorough understanding of the theories and practice of AL: Understanding the history of AL and its development since the founder Reg Revans. Confidence & experience of all the roles in the AL practice. presenter, set member, facilitator and receive facilitation feedback. Appreciation of how AL is built on Kolb's learning cycle and how it relates to other learning theories e.g. Honey & Mumford's learning style, Argyris & Schon's single and double loop learning, Senge's ladder of inference.

Ability to design an AL intervention to meet organisational needs: Clear understanding of action learning principles. Ability to clarify purpose of action learning work with the internal commissioner or sponsor. Ability to design an appropriate evaluation framework. Ability to present action learning in language that is appropriate for the organisational context

Ability to integrate AL into leadership, management and coaching programmes: Understanding of the range of action learning applications. Understanding of the core skills of action learning and how they relate to leadership, management and coaching. Ability to design an action learning intervention so that it meets organisational objectives

An understanding of when to use the different approaches of AL: Understanding of the range of action learning approaches e.g. peer consultancy, laser,action learning etc. Ability to recognise when to use the classic i.e Reg Revans model of action learning and when to adapt it.
