SL: Indirect Service-Learning Level 2

This badge is issued to students who successfully complete a service learning project. Service-learning requires students to work on a community issue and reflect on lessons learned. Indirect service-learning occurs when students apply the skills they learned in class to support a community organization. For example, students analyze survey results, develop a marketing or social media plan, or design a web site. Students are expected to spend 10 or more hours on the project.

Service-learning is course-based experiential learning that focuses on using academic knowledge to resolve a problem for a community partner. Students apply their expertise to solve the community partner's problem. Additionally, the students reflect on their service-learning experience. So, service-learning has three parts: 1) learning about a community problem; 2) intervening to improve the situation; 3) reflecting on the impact of the learning and intervention on the student.

Indirect service-learning occurs when students apply the skills they learned in class to support a community organization. Indirect service-learning occurs when students apply the skills they learned in class to support a community organization. Students participating in indirect service-learning gain experience applying their knowledge to solve a problem facing a community organization. They also learn about the organizations mission and community needs.

To earn this badge, the student: 1) Completed a course-embedded service-learning project at East Stroudsburg University. 2) Provided 10 or more hours of service to a community organization. 3) Participated in formal and informal reflection on the impact of the service-learning project.
