Winter Service Operations: Highways England equipment (6159-31)

This qualification is aimed at learners who are working for the Highways England contracts, who are responsible for the direct supervision and operating of winter service vehicles and snow blowers. Successful candidates will be eligible to obtain a NEREO operative qualification registration card, endorsed with the appropriate category, valid for a five-year period.

Pre-start checks are carried out on vehicle, spreading and plough equipment ; Vehicle record and vehicle defects are recorded in the maintaining agent/contractor prescribed format ; Attach quick fit snowplough to vehicle ; Snowplough settings are appropriate for vehicle loading, the road surface, snow conditions and clearing sequence selected. ; Vehicle is manoeuvred and parked.

The winter service vehicle and equipment is driven and operated in a manner appropriate to typical winter conditions ; Operate Schmidt or Romaquip spreading unit for pre-wetting treatment ; Operate quick-fit angle plough ; Snowplough is detached from vehicle ; Spreading material is discharged and the spreader and vehicle are washed down ;The winter service operation is carried out in a safe manner ; Data recorded is legible, complete, accurate and up to date.

All credentials issued will only be valid for 5 years from the date of successful completion of a full qualification. Complete re-assessment will have to be undertaken to renew the certificate and registration card. Units may be renewed at any time and a new certificate/credential will be issued with a 5 year expiry date.
