This course has been developed for National Health staff and contractors required to perform the duties of a Competent Person (Decontamination) as defined in NHS Guidance. The course enables learners to carry out the recommended testing procedures on small steam sterilizers for the sterilization of non-wrapped solid products.

Earning Criteria

Through a closed book assessment, the learner showed an understanding of the role of sterilization within the decontamination process, roles and responsibilities of key personnel, microbiology terms and definitions, risks associated with small steam sterilizers, basic properties of steam, principles of pressure and temperature measurement, specified test equipment, periodic testing requirements, and test results.

Through practical assessment, the learner showed an understanding of calibration checks, component layout and cycle, automatic control test, thermometric test and yearly/revalidation test.
