This person has successfully demonstrated all of the knowledge and practical competencies required to achieve the Stage 1 Certificate in English. They have developed skills in reading, speaking, listening and writing in English.

They can recognise and understand relevant key specialist words. Read and understand words commonly used on a form. They are able to use a variety of reading strategies to help decode unfamiliar words. They can understand and use organisational features to locate information and identify the main points and ideas in a text. They can select appropriate texts to suit their own purposes and can respond to straightforward questions as well as give clear explanations in different contexts.

They can listen and respond to spoken English including explanations and instructions and can engage in discussions about familiar topics. They are able to produce text that uses grammatically correct and complete sentences and uses the appropriate punctuation. They can spell key words and can proof read their own writing, identifying and correcting errors of sense and spelling. They can plan, draft and produce legible written text that is fit for purpose and audience.
