Earning Criteria

This person understands the fundamental uses of cabling and connectivity, including various types of antennas, wireless systems and test equipment. They can describe the components, attributes and uses of cables and connectors, being able to identify Cat 1-4 cables and knowing the differences between Cat 5 & Cat 6 cables. They can describe the function and purpose of different types of antenna, as well as the technology and standards for using wireless systems.

This person understands the fundamentals of maintenance processes, being able to identify a range of common maintenance tools and explain their use. They can identify a range of maintenance record types and recording methods and explain their purpose and describe the different types of maintenance, including appreciation of organisation processes and relevant SLAs.

This person understand the fundamentals of hardware devices, their comparability, compatibility and access. They are able to compare the features of hardware components, their performance and their benefits and evaluate hardware readiness and compatibility. They can describe configuration and support of devices and device drivers and considerations for implementing access control to local hardware and applications.

This person understands practical applications of numerical skills required for network addressing and they can describe units used in computing: They can recognise the basic number systems used in computer networks and will be able to recognise IP addresses for IPv4 and IPv6.

This person understands networking skills required to maintain a secure network. They can describe the four layers of the TCP/IP stack mode and are able to describe configuration of IP settings. They recognise the purpose of server DNS and can describe the configuration of client DNS, as well as configuration of remote access to a network using remote management systems. They can describe the access control when maintaining network security and the use of directory services to access files.
