Advanced Practitioner in Clinical Nutrition (RD-AP or RDN-AP)

RD-APs or RDN-APs are experienced RDs who have the knowledge and skill required to autonomously apply the nutrition care process, using an evidenced-based approach, at an optimal level of accuracy and efficiency. These individuals function above a specialist level with an expanded scope of practice and strategically select the most appropriate nutrition interventions by effectively planning, evaluating, and communicating targeted outcomes in clinical nutrition.

Earning Criteria

Maintenance of current RD status with CDR for a minimum of 4 years from the original examination date.
Documentation of 2,000 hours of practice experience as an RD in clinical nutrition within the past five years.
Completion of one professional experience: 1) graduate degree, 2) evidence of presenting research to a professional audience within the past five years, 3) evidence of publishing or editing/reviewing a peer-reviewed clinical nutrition article, book, or book chapter within the past five years, 4) specialist certification in a clinical nutrition-related topic requiring the RD or RDN as a prerequisite qualification. Candidates must hold the specialist certification at the time of the examination.
Submission of an eligibility application requiring third-party verification of 2,000 hours of work as an RD in clinical nutrition along with evidence of a graduate degree, presentation, publication/review, or a specialist credential.
Successfully pass a computer-based, multiple-choice and case management exam.
