Introduction to Video Game Design

Earners of this badge will acquire an overview of the early development pipeline of a video game. They will be introduced to concepts such as creating a Game Design Document, creating concept art, and making a rough block-out of a game level in a game engine in order to test the mechanics and player experience. They will understand the importance of planning and communication, throughout the process & the role of narrative structure, and how storytelling can help create a sense of immersion.

- Demonstrate an understanding of effective level design using industry standard practices, and how to encourage the player to navigate the environment through subtle guidance.
- Demonstrate an understanding of how to create a Game Design Document that sets out the building blocks for their project

Earning Criteria

Students are required to complete topics, that include: - What is a game; The GDD Part 1 and 2; Game Mechanics; Level Design; The Block-Out; Game-Engines.

Assessments are designed to consolidate the students learning. Learners will complete two short assignments throughout the micro-course. These include a level demonstration and a written game design document of 1,500 words.
