This microcredential is available to Binghamton University students currently enrolled in the online RN to BS program to enhance their working with victims of crime, especially in emergency and psychiatric settings, and consists of two nonsequential 3-credit online courses: NURS Z335/HSCI 331 - Forensic Health Essentials (spring or summer) and NURS Z335B / HSCI 332 - Forensic Health of Victims (fall).

This microcredential is open to students currently enrolled in the RN to BS online program at Binghamton University.

NURS Z335 / HSCI 331- Forensic Health Essentials: This course provides an overview of various forensic disciplines, violence and diversity, forensic assessment and documentation, the collection and preservation of evidence, overview of criminal aspects of forensics, introduction to death investigation, basic civil issues, and principles of collaboration and consultation.

NURS Z335B / HSCI 332 - Forensic Health of Victims: This course provides an overview of victim needs and rights, responses to trauma/trauma informed approach, victim’s resources, expert witness testimony, assessment and intervention strategies for intrafamilial violence, sexual violence, stalking, workplace violence, hate crimes, homicide, and nonviolent crimes, such as DUI.

At the end of the two courses, students will also complete a portfolio showcasing the basic skills they learned in: forensic assessment, evidence collection, trauma-informed care, expert witness testimony, and assessment and intervention plan (inclusive of cultural competence and referrals) development for victims of family, sexual, and workplace violence, as well as those subjected to hate and nonviolence crimes.
