Effective Online Teaching

The Effective Online Teaching micro-credential is awarded to participants who have successfully completed this 4-week, fully online course. A minimum commitment of 3-5 hours per week is recommended. Participants are required to actively participate in this course where they will explore best practices for online teaching, explore strategies to promote academic integrity, discuss the importance of online learning communities, and demonstrate mastery of Blackboard Learn tools.

Participants have completed the “Introduction to Online Teaching” module. They are introduced to online teaching and discuss best practice strategies for teaching an online class. Content includes best practice strategies for teaching an online course, expectations for online instructors at Atlantic Cape, requirements of the Department of Education for distance education to have regular and substantive interaction,

(continued) using the Online Equivalencies Audit spreadsheet to ensure online courses provide students with a comparable learning experience to their face-to-face counterpart, strategies for designing an effective online course, and the importance of creating accessible digital content for all students.

Participants have completed the “Academic Integrity in the Online Environment” module. Content includes academic integrity in online courses; methods to employ to discourage cheating and plagiarism in online courses; information about Atlantic Cape’s plagiarism detection software, Turnitin; information about Atlantic Cape’s online proctoring solution, Honorlock; and Blackboard Learn tutorials to assist in learning how to use Blackboard Learn tools to complete the final course assignment.

Participants have completed the “Creating Learning Communities” module. Content includes: effectively facilitating online discussions; the importance of developing an online learning community among online students; discussion board etiquette; information about Atlantic Cape’s web conferencing tool integrated with Blackboard, Collaborate; the Blackboard Exemplary Course Program Rubric and the Specific Review Standards from the Quality Matters Higher Education Rubric.

Participants have developed a “module” of content in a Blackboard course shell. Participants are graded according to a rubric containing four criteria: Course Design, Interaction and Collaboration, Assessment, and Learner Support.
