Certified Pharmacy Executive Leader (CPEL)
The CPEL credential provides national recognition of core competencies in professionalism, leading people, leading the pharmacy enterprise, and leading within and across complex health care systems. CPELs have a minimum of 5 years progressive and sustained leadership experience in healthcare organizations resulting in advancing pharmacy practice and positive patient outcomes. To become certified, candidates demonstrate achievement of CPEL competencies and participate in a capstone at ASHP.

Earning Criteria

Currently in an executive leadership position with a minimum of 5 years (post-residency) progressive and sustained leadership experience including significant managerial oversight in a healthcare organization resulting in advancing pharmacy practice and positive patient outcomes.

Graduation from a pharmacy program accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) or a program outside the U.S. that qualifies the individual to practice in the jurisdiction. Must have valid and unrestricted license as a pharmacist in the U.S. or another jurisdiction.

Current ASHP member at the time of application (with sustained membership throughout the certification period).

Documentation of current (within past 2 years) volunteerism in healthcare-related organizations such as a charitable or professional organization where your contribution was not compensated (excluding precepting roles).

References (2) including one from a senior health system executive affirming CPEL experience/oversight requirements.

Standards
The ASHP Certified Pharmacy Executive Leader credential is based on a validated framework of pharmacy professional and leadership competencies. Essential professional competencies were derived from ASHP standards and guidelines, subject matter experts, advisory committee experiences, and the Korn Ferry Leadership Architect.
