The earner of this badge will be able to employ emotional intelligence skills in their professional relationships and interpersonal relationships. The earner will be able to effectively manage their emotions including recognizing and dismissing unproductive emotions when necessary, understand how emotions affect themself and those around them, identify the emotional state of self and others, and use social skills to manage conversations, interactions, and relationships.

Earning Criteria

Complete a self-assessment utilizing the provided questionnaire designed to measure emotional intelligence. Please see Emotional Intelligence Self-Assessment for guidance.

Participate in a series of emotional intelligence exercises with a mentor to amplify the emotional intelligence skillset. The mentor will document the exercises in memorandum format for the earner to complete the activity worksheets. Please see 1) Emotional Intelligence Exercises & 2) Instructions and Documentation for Completing Emotional Intelligence Exercises for guidance.

Acquire real-world experience during the First Sergeant shadowing period prior to First Sergeant Academy (FSA) attendance and following FSA graduation. Documentation will be in the form of the Emotional Intelligence Assessment tool completed by the First Sergeant Mentor who identifies earner strengths, areas for improvement, and how the earner employed emotional intelligence skills. Compile a portfolio that includes the emotional intelligence self-assessment questionnaire, the completed emotional intelligence application exercise worksheet, and the Shadowing Report Card. Please see Portfolio Checklist for guidance.

The portfolio was reviewed by the First Sergeants' Council according to the Emotional Intelligence Rubric and recommended for the award of the Emotional Intelligence badge.
Standards
This questionnaire will assist First Sergeants in understanding their own emotional intelligence levels. This introspection can assist them in applying this competency to other areas of their role.
It is one thing to understand our emotional intelligence levels, it is another entirely to understand how to apply them. These activities will assist new First Sergeants in recognizing emotional intelligence levels in others and correctly applying the correct courses of action for various situations.
