Core Competencies in Disaster Preparedness

Earners learn and apply techniques for collaboration as a member of an emergency response team across various roles before, during, and after a disaster. Using the four phases of emergency management- mitigation, preparedness, response, and recovery- participants can identify the role of Federal, state and local governments in natural and man-made disasters. Through FEMA training, Citizen Preparedness Corp training and HOPE immersive field training, earners further develop response skills.

Earning Criteria

Earners complete an online FEMA training course to develop knowledge of communication and organizational structure during disaster scenarios, complete Citizens Preparedness Corps training designed by NYS emergency management professionals to develop a personal disaster preparedness plan, and participation in a HOPE field training exercise to apply these skills in a multi-day scenario. Participants submit a reflection project of these experiences to show how they utilized these skills.
