Standards
There are 10 NAEYC program standards. The standards were created by experts and educators across the country in order to define what NAEYC believes all early childhood programs should provide and to serve as a requirement for program accreditation. These standards can help guide families as they choose an early childhood program for their child.
These standards include the core set of knowledge, skills, values, and dispositions that early childhood educators must demonstrate to effectively promote the development, learning, and well-being of all young children, as defined by NAEYC.
These competencies include the knowledge, skills, and individual practices necessary for professionals working with young children and their families in Head Start and Early Head Start, child care, or home visiting programs. The competencies allow educators to build family engagement efforts and support positive outcomes for children and families.
These standards offer a common language for different types of Family Strengthening and Family Support programs such as Family Resource Centers, home visiting programs, and child development programs. They are a tool for planning, providing, and assessing quality practice, and ensure families are supported and strengthened by quality practice.
Protective factors are characteristics or strengths of individuals, families, communities or societies that act to mitigate risks and promote positive well-being and healthy development. This Framework helps families develop the attributes needed to successfully navigate difficult situations.
(page 12) Parents as Teachers (PAT) has established core competencies to support their parent educators. The competencies are grouped under these categories: Family Support and Parenting Education; Child and Family Development; Human Diversity within Family Systems; Health, Safety, and Nutrition; Relationships between Families and Communities.
