Biomedical Sciences and the Nanoworld Laboratory
Issued by
Northeastern University
Recipients of this badge engaged in a full-day intensive, hands-on laboratory experience in addition to a Biomedical Sciences and the Nanoworld Seminar. Participants synthesized and characterized gold nanoparticles, conjugated a chemotherapeutic drug to the nanoparticles, treated human breast cancer cells with the nanomedicine, performed microscopy of the treated cells, and extracted and analyzed protein from treated cells.
Earning Criteria
-
Complete NU BioRAFT safety training necessary for attending a research laboratory (Biosafety Awareness Training, Fundamentals of Laboratory Safety, Biosafety Part II, and Hazardous Waste Training); attend and engage in the in-person laboratory session
-
Synthesize a functional gold nanoparticle-based nanomedicine and characterize nanoparticle size and stability
-
Treat human breast cancer cells with nanomedicine, perform microscopy of treated cells, and determine cell viability
-
Extract protein from treated cells and perform western blotting and protein analysis of human cell extracts
