Winter Service Operations: Vehicles and Snowploughs (6159-30)

This qualification is aimed at learners who are working for the Highways England, National Assembly for Wales and local authorities, who are responsible for the direct supervision and operating of winter service vehicles and snow blowers. Successful candidates will be eligible to obtain a NEREO operative qualification registration card, endorsed with the appropriate category, valid for a five-year period.

Type of blade used ; Snowploughing policy ; Safe systems of work ; Hazards and risks associated with snow clearing

The methods used to communicate between operators and control centres ; The importance of good reporting of weather conditions on route

The learner will be able to demonstrate and show practical tasks related to prime mover and snowplough to include:

Vehicles and equipment ; Pre-start checks ; Snowplough fitting and adjustments ; Vehicle and equipment manoeuvring ; Demounting of snowplough

This person may also have skills and knowledge in relation to Preparing and Operating Winter Service Vehicles and Equipment (vehicles and snowploughs) up to 3500 kg, to include agricultural tractors or Medium Sized LGV 3500 kg to 7500 kg or Large LGV vehicles over 7500 kg

In each case the learner will have covered the following skills:

Pre-start checks are carried out on vehicle ; Pre-start checks are carried out on the snowplough equipment. ; Vehicle and equipment defects are recorded in the prescribed format ; Attach snowplough to vehicle ; Snowplough fittings are appropriate for vehicle loading, the road surface, snow conditions and clearing sequence selected ; The vehicle and equipment is driven and operated in a manner appropriate to typical winter conditions ; Operate angle snowplough.

Snowplough is detached from vehicle ; The winter service operation is carried out in a safe manner ; Underpinning knowledge of winter service equipment.

This person will also have skills and knowledge in relation to Preparing and Operating Winter Service Vehicles and Equipment (vehicles and snowploughs) up to 3500 kg, to include agricultural tractors or Medium Sized LGV 3500 kg to 7500 kg or Large LGV vehicles over 7500 k.

All credentials issued will only be valid for 5 years from the date of successful completion of a full qualification. Complete re-assessment will have to be undertaken to renew the certificate and registration card. Units may be renewed at any time and a new certificate/credential will be issued with a 5 year expiry date.
