This qualification is aimed at learners who are working for the local authorities, who are responsible for the direct supervision and operating of winter service vehicles and snow blowers. Successful candidates will be eligible to obtain a NEREO operative qualification registration card, endorsed with the appropriate category, valid for a five-year period.

This person may also have skills and knowledge in relation to Preparing and Operating Winter Service Equipment up to 3500 kg and Agricultural Tractors or Medium Sized LGV (3500kg – 7500kg tractors or equipment over 7500kg In each case the learner will have covered the following skills:

Pre-start checks are carried out on vehicle ; Pre-start checks are carried out on the spreading equipment ; Pre-start checks are carried out on the snowplough equipment ; Vehicle and equipment defects are recorded in the prescribed format ; Attach snowplough to vehicle ; Snowplough fittings are appropriate for the vehicle, the road surface, snow conditions and clearing sequence selected

Vehicle is manoeuvred and parked for loading ; The winter service vehicle is driven in a manner appropriate to typical winter conditions ; Operate spreading unit ; Operate angle snowplough • Snowplough is detached from vehicle ; Spreading material is discharged and the spreader and vehicle are washed-down ; Spreader is demounted from vehicle ; The winter service operation is carried out in a safe manner ; Underpinning knowledge of winter service equipment

The learner may also achieve endorsements which the learner achieves if they complete learning in the practical assessment. These include ; Spreader fixed ; Spreader towed ; Plough angle blade/Vee blade ; Brine application

All credentials issued will only be valid for 5 years from the date of successful completion of a full qualification. Complete re-assessment will have to be undertaken to renew the certificate and registration card. Units may be renewed at any time and a new certificate/credential will be issued with a 5 year expiry date.
