This person has successfully demonstrated all of the knowledge and practical competencies required to achieve the Skills Proficiency Certificate in Basic Painting and Decorating.

They can maintain safe working conditions including employing practices to prevent hazards whilst using various equipment/materials to protect surrounding work areas from contamination. They can erect simple scaffold platforms and inspect for faults. They can select and use the correct protective clothing and safety equipment needed for specific tasks and store toxic materials safely. They can select and maintain tools in a correct and safe manner.

They can also select and use surface preparation materials, identify and treat surface imperfections and prepare and apply surface coatings. They can select and use the correct materials for the job in hand and can apply a range of surface coatings including oil, water and spirit based. They can apply them using different methods including brushes, rollers, pads and mittens.
