• They are able to: Understand the role and responsibilities of a first aider; Assess an incident; Manage an unresponsive casualty who is breathing normally; Manage an unresponsive casualty who is not breathing normally; Recognise and assist a casualty who is choking; Manage a casualty with external bleeding; Manage a casualty who is in shock; Manage a casualty with a minor injury 
• Know the hazards in the dental setting; Understand organisational and legal requirements for health and safety within the dental setting; Act upon hazards in the dental setting; Reduce the risks to health and safety in the dental setting 
• Understand the role and responsibilities of a dental nurse; Understand the role of the team and management in dental practice;  reflect on own professional practice and identify areas for improvement; Understand the needs of patients accessing dental care; Perform the role of a dental nurse in a professional manner 
• Understand how to apply standard precautions of infection control for clinical dental procedures; Understand how to apply health and safety measures for clinical dental procedures; Apply methods of sterilisation for dental instruments and equipment; Safely dispose of hazardous waste and non-hazardous waste
• Understand the process of infection control; Understand the significance of micro-organisms; Understand the management of infectious conditions affecting dental patients; Know the various methods of decontamination and sterilisation; Understand relevant health and safety legislation, policies and guidelines
• Prepare for oral health assessment;  record and process oral health assessments
• Provide support and resources for taking dental images; Understand how to process dental images; Understand the purpose of quality assuring dental images; Provide support to the patient and operator before, during and after treatment
• Select and prepare equipment, instruments and materials for fixed prostheses;  select and prepare equipment, instruments and materials for removable prostheses; Understand how to prepare equipment, instruments and materials for orthodontic appliances
• Prepare the clinical environment for non surgical endodontic procedures;  Assist the operator and support the patient during non surgical endodontic procedures
• Prepare the patient and the dental environment for extractions and minor oral surgery;  Assist the operator and support the patient during extractions and minor oral surgery;  Assist the operator and support the patient following extractions and minor oral surgery
• Understand the reasons for providing patients with oral health information in response to promotional campaigns; Communicate with patients; Provide oral hygiene advice to meet the needs of the patient
• Understand the organisational and legal requirements which apply to the assessment of oral health and treatment planning; Understand methods of oral heath assessment; Know the structure and function of oral and dental anatomy in relation to patient assessment; Understand how medical conditions and oral diseases inform treatment planning; Know the classifications of drugs referred to in treatment planning
• Know how to respond to medical emergencies which may occur during assessment and treatment planning
• Know the regulations and hazards associated with ionising radiation; Understand the different radiographic films and their uses; Understand the imaging process and the management of chemicals used for processing radiographs; Understand the importance of stock control, mounting and quality assurance in dental radiography
• Know the types and causes of oral disease; Understand prevention and management of oral diseases; Know the procedures, equipment, instruments and materials for restorative treatment; Know the procedures, equipment, instruments and materials for fixed and removable prostheses; Know the process, equipment, instruments and materials for orthodontics
• Know the process, equipment, instruments and materials for non surgical endodontic treatment; Know the process, equipment, instruments and materials for extractions and minor oral surgery
